Job Summary And Qualifications

Position Summary:

The Registered Nurse provides clinical and administrative support to the program. The RN performs

therapeutic measures prescribed and delegated by the physician. Participates in patient education

and rehabilitation and provides interpretation of treatment to the patient and the patient’s family.

The RN coordinates unit activities and assures accountability of all assigned tasks.

Essential Duties:

  • Conducts initial and ongoing data collection regarding patients individually and in groups and

uses that data to initiate appropriate therapeutic intervention.

  • Identifies potential risk factors and communicates observations to the MD and treatment team.

Implements interventions under the direction of the MD; such as safety levels, seclusion,

restraint, etc. according to policy and procedure including associated documents.

  • Utilizes the multidisciplinary treatment plan and own knowledge and skill to guide interventions

with patients. Provide comprehensive care to patients as assigned including physical, as well as

psychological care. Contributes to the plan of care and revision of that plan.

  • Documents observations, interventions and outcomes in the medical record according to

policy and procedure.

  • Work in function of Charge Nurse as needed and as assigned.
  • Provides educational information to patients and families.
  • Other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the patient, unit, and facility.

Manages groups of patients

  • Plan, lead or co-lead groups and activities with patients and documents observations in the

medical record. Assess patients for appropriateness for inclusion in activities.

  • Assists with patient and family education regarding treatment issues and documents on patient

and family education form.

Provide for a safe and therapeutic milieu

  • Monitors patient behavior on the unit intervening as appropriate to ensure patient safety.

Documents observations, interventions and outcomes in medical record.

  • Assists patients in maintaining individual and common areas.
  • Communicates pertinent information to MD and treatment team.
  • Promotes therapeutic atmosphere on unit.
  • Ensures that all interventions are implemented in such a manner that the patients’ rights,

dignity and safety are assured.

  • Orients patients and families to the programs and expectations.
  • Assists in the cleaning and maintenance of order in the clinical area.

Maintains current and up-to-date knowledge and skills related to patient treatment.

  • Seeks appropriate learning opportunities.
  • Maintains certification in CPI & BLS according to policy. Completes all annual or recurring competencies as identified by facility.
  • Provides care in a manner that demonstrates competence in the implementation of these techniques as indicated by the clinical presentation.

Age Specific Care:

This position requires competence in assessment, treatment, and/or care for the age groups

indicated. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to

provide care, based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria,

appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area. The skills and

knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training, or

experience.

Infant: Birth – 1 year

Adolescent: 13 years – 18 years

Adult: 19 years – 65 years

Position Requirements

Required Education: Required License/Certification: Required Experience:

Graduate from an accredited

school of nursing. Diploma

Program in Nursing, an Associate

Degree in Nursing or a

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the state of practice and/or active compact license, in accordance with laws and regulation. Current American Heart Association or Red Cross BLS. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI) certification within 90 days of hire. Experience in psychiatric nursing.
